Hudson Health Center open to all U of M students, offers service with a smile

A sure bet in life is that everyone becomes ill from time totime. Another fairly safe bet is that college students very rarelyhave anything in their pockets other than an occasional jot oflint.

Hudson Health Services at The University of Memphis, open Mondaythrough Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., maintains both of theseassumptions with urgent and solemn regard.

"We offer caring health workers and fairly comprehensivetreatment at a very reasonable rate," said Jacqueline DeFouw, U ofM health educator.

The rates are so reasonable, in fact, that most lab results andx-rays are free for all students at The U of M.

"Whether you're full time, part time or enrolled for just onehour, you are eligible for treatment," DeFouw said.

Hudson Health Services, on Desoto, south of The Ned McWherterLibrary, offers free HIV tests and will soon offer free allergyinjections.

"We will be offering free allergy testing sometime soon," DeFouwsaid. "Any students who are interested can call the Hudson HealthCenter at 678-2287."

Along with allergy testing, the health center screens fordiabetes, cholesterol, anemia and other problems.

"I've been twice," said Shannon Gates, a recent graduate of TheUniversity. "I didn't have to wait long and the people there werevery friendly. Being from out of town, it's nice to know that thereis reliable health care (on campus)."

While all students are qualified to utilize the Hudson HealthCenter, some may need permission from their parents.

"Patients who are 18 years of age or older may sign thePermissible to Treat form," said DeFouw. "Patients who are under 18years of age must have the form signed by their parent or legalguardian."

For those students curious to see if Health Services will writeexcuses for missing class the answer is realistic and thorough.

"We urge students to come around their class schedule," DeFouwsaid. "Excuses are not given without the strict consent of thestaff."

Prescriptions can also be filled at the Health Center.

"Prescription drugs may be purchased at a nominal charge,"DeFouw said. "But the prescriptions must be written by the HudsonHealth Center staff."

Hudson Health Services staff members will be having a healthfair on Sept. 17. "We want to acquaint students with our servicesto benefit their physical, psychological and spiritual well being,"DeFouw said.
