Freshman class settles into college lifestyle

After a couple of years, it sometimes seems old -- faces becomethe same, and buildings are all too familiar.

However, for the bright-eyed freshman class of 2007, lifecouldn't be better.

With the first week of school drawing to a close, college isproving to be what some expected and a whole lot more. Despitehaving the pressures of waking up on time after a night of too muchfreedom, students are finding that there aren't as manyresponsibilities as they once thought.

As a result, some have made it a top priority to stayfocused.

Freshman computer science major Bobby Larry said he has beenresponsible for himself since high school, which made things alittle easier on him.

"It's not hard," Larry said. "I like the freedom, and I thinkit's going to get better once I get used to everything.

"It (school) is everything I thought it was going to be. I'mlooking forward to learning a lot and after a while, coming homewith my degree."

Fellow freshman and business finance major Miriam Clay agreed. She said she really enjoyed her first week at The University ofMemphis, along with meeting many new people.

"I was expecting it to be different," Clay said. "You have a lotof free time on your hands, but I wasn't too scared. College to meis kind of like home. I had a job then and now this is my job."

Although the past few days have left some homesick, others likeLarry and Clay are filled with excitement about what the remainderof the school year holds. Especially with the many socialactivities high school couldn't provide.

Best friends and Ripley, Tenn. natives Brystal Pearson and GinaEaton said they look forward to pledging a sorority and going toall the parties. They said they even would like to join a fewclubs.

Some of the suggestions The University offers new freshmen arebeing sure to add or drop classes correctly by logging on toTigerWeb and following the instructions, keeping in contact withfamily and friends at home through phone or e-mail, looking forquiet and comfortable places to study and eliminating stress byworking out at the Student Recreation and Fitness Center.

With an endless amount of help around, students will soon findthemselves fitting right into place on The U of M campus.
