Women's tennis closes with win

JONESBORO, Ark. -- The University of Memphis women's tennis team(14-6, 3-1 C-USA) closed its 2002 regular season with a 6-1 roadwin at Arkansas State, Tuesday. The Lady Tigers finish the springregular season with the eighth-best winning percentage in LadyTiger history (.700).

The Lady Tigers won No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches, with theNo. 2 team of Marlene Dirnstorfer and Sumitra Rao down 1-2 whenthey forfeited their No. 2 match. Seniors Sabrina Lindemann andMonica Gonzalez-Gordo downed the ASU team of Liga Geme and MeganMcCoy, 8-2, while the team of Viktoria Gruber and AndreaFeichtinger downed the No. 3 doubles team of Barbara Gombosi andCatherine Carui, 8-2.

The Lady Tigers then put the match away by winning five of thesix singles matches. Lindemann was the only Lady Tiger to fall insingles, as Geme, the No. 85 ranked singles player in the country,downed Lindemann, 6-3, 6-2. The Lady Tiger line-up underwent somechanges as Dirnstorfer and Rao were both out of singles action dueto injuries. Junior Rebecca Garner filled in at No. 4 singles,winning her match 6-2, 6-2 over Gombosi, while freshman KristinNoble stepped in to play No. 6 singles, but received a forfeit whenASU did not have a healthy player for the line-up.
