CHICAGO -- University of Memphis distance runner Mate Nemeth wasnamed C-USA Men's Track Athlete of the Week as announced by theleague office, Tuesday.
The winner of the 3000m steeplechase at the historic Penn Relaysthis weekend, Nemeth ran an 8:49.92 in the event, defeating morethan 40 of the nation's finest collegiate athletes. He broke hisown school record in the victory.
Nemeth has been a prolific distance runner for Memphis in 2003.A native of Szekszard, Hungary, Nemeth transferred from NorthernIowa. He won the C-USA Championship in the Indoor 3000m run and isseeded among the league's best in three events at the C-USA OutdoorChampion-ships on May 15-17.
The Penn Relays feature more than 22,000 high school, collegeand professional athletes from all over the world. The meet isattended by more than 100,000 fans over the three days making itthe best attended track event in the United States each year, andone of the best attended in the world.
Nemeth is the first Memphis Tiger to win an event at the PennRelays since 1973 when All-American Ed Hammonds won the 100-yarddash with a time of 9.40. Hammonds' teammate, All-American LynnFox, placed second in the event giving Memphis a memorable 1-2finish.
