Some graduating seniors this May will decide to take jobs outside their majors for temporary or extended periods.
Their reasons include earning extra money before entering graduate school, traveling before getting involved with a job in their chosen field, enjoying their current job and not being ready to go into their field.
Monica Hart, biology major, said she can’t wait for graduation but is not ready to settle down yet.
“I am ready to graduate but not actually ready for graduate school,” Hart said. “I want to travel to see if I want biology to be my main job opportunity.”
Kris Woods, engineering major, said he enjoys his current job and is not ready to go into his field.
“I love my major, but at this time I enjoy my job also,” Woods said. “My job consists of working with kids and teaching them that there are other alternatives for them than drugs and alcohol.”
Woods said his job has led him to question whether another degree would help him find his calling.
“I am thinking about becoming a teacher because I love working with kids, so I will probably go to graduate school next year,” he added.
Natasha Parks, education major, said she is working outside her college concentration because she wants to earn some extra money to go to graduate school in Fall 2004.
“I am graduating soon, and I have to make sure that I have some extra cash because I am moving on my own and into another state,” Parks said. “I need to be stable before entering into a city I know absolutely nothing about, and graduate school is not cheap.”
Some seniors graduating in May or December said four years in college was enough, and they have decided to wait to find a job in the field of their major.
Hart said she enjoys studying and learning about biology, but traveling is better for her.
“I want to be involved in biology, but right now I am going to live on the edge and travel.”
Despite questions about future jobs, Hart said her college years were great.
“I enjoyed my college experience, but I can’t wait until graduation, so I can go to either Paris or England.”
