Editor looks back

The final Spring 2003 issue of The Daily Helmsman.

For most on this campus, this last Helmsman is by far not alandmark event. For me, however, it is the end of seven consecutivesemesters at a newspaper that helped shape and enhance my educationat The University of Memphis.

For all the education garnered in my studies, I feel I havegained the most by working at this small college publication.

Professor Candy Justice has acted as a mentor and friend.Professor Justice silently champions young journalists with littlerecognition. Her reward is witnessing the enrichment andprogression of student journalists that come to The Helmsman tolearn and grow. I truly appreciate all of her support andencouragement.

Over the last few years, I have been amazed at the maturity andprofessionalism of The Helmsman staff. I've seen exceptionallytalented reporters and editors come and go. But one thing remainsconstant: each staff member leaves with invaluable knowledge andexperience of what it's like to work at a newspaper -- a real, daily newspaper.

I will miss working, and practically living, at The Helmsman. The staff has become like a family to me albeit maybe adysfunctional one.

I'm proud of you all. And I wish you the best.
