Continuing Education offers a variety of opportunities

For students who can't get enough knowledge from their classes,Continuing Education presents more learning opportunities.

Continuing Education is a non-credit program offered by TheUniversity of Memphis to the community. Classes include subjectslike ACT and LSAT test preparation, photography, dessertpreparation, woodworking, dance and painting.

The summer program offers a greater emphasis on classes forchildren, said Barbara Belzer, director of Continuing Education.Otherwise, the program is scaled down in the summer, but offersbasically the same variety of courses.

Many opportunities exist for college students who want to learnfor fun or necessity, Belzer said, including more than 100 coursesoffered online for students on the move during the summer.

"The language classes are always good for those who want tostudy abroad," Belzer said.

Summer is also a good time to get in shape, she added. Theprogram offers yoga, aquatic fitness and other fitness classes.

"You can relax and get yourself ready for what is coming up,"Belzer said.

Continuing Education is for anyone who enjoys learning, Belzersaid, calling the program subject learning because individuals canlearn about the subjects that interest them, not just requiredcourses.

"We enhance the lifelong learning experience," Belzer said."Learning doesn't end when you graduate. You learn out of fun andnecessity and we provide both."

The business-type courses can also be of value to individualsgetting ready to graduate, Belzer said.

The department recently hired Rick Marcus, a contract andprofessional training specialist, to develop foreign language andbusiness courses.

In the past, only beginning level language courses were offered. Now individuals can build on their existing language skills.

Continuing Education aims to "build up the program so (people)can take sequences of courses and build up their skill levels,"Marcus said.

The program also offers a defensive driving course inSpanish.

The Continuing Education Program is housed in Richardson Towersbut will move to Brister Hall June 23.

"The location is a lot more convenient, specially with theinteraction with other campus offices," Belzer said. "We will bemuch more visible on campus and people will know where we are."
