Martha Burk once said, "It's an insult to the 250,000 womenserving in the United States military. It's appalling that thewomen who are willing to lay down their lives for democratic idealsshould be shut out of this club."
I personally do not think that Jessica Lynch cares right nowabout an Augusta membership. Martha Burk should not be applaudedfor anything that she has done. She has turned a critical issueinto a senseless camel race filled with likes of Jesse Jackson andthe Ku Klux Klan.
She has also stooped to a horrendous low by bringing the crisisin Iraq into her little tiff. Hootie Johnson and Augusta Nationalhave every right to give membership to anyone that they choose. DoI believe that it is right? No.
Do I believe that Hootie Johnson is a sexist? No.
I am quite sure that anyone that calls himself "Hootie" is avery big fan of women. We never once got upset with Al Bundy's "NoMa'am" or the little rascals with their "He-man Woman Haters" groupdid we?
Now before I get proclaimed a sexist, I do believe a woman hasevery right to do, be and join whatever they want.
Do I believe that the best president at a Tennessee Universityis named "Shirley?" Yes.
Do I believe that the most successful athlete at our Universityis named "Beth?" Yes.
Pat Summit should be considered for the North Carolina job, andI would even go out on the limb and say Diana Taurasi might need tosuit up for Connecticut's men's team next year.
Are they limited because they are women? Yes.
Should they be allowed to join Augusta? It's not any of mybusiness.
I cannot be an Alpha Gam, play in the WNBA, or attend Spellmanbecause I am male, but it is not OK for Hootie to have limits onhis membership?
I personally would like to see a woman become a member, butMartha Burk has ruined all hopes of having a woman wear a greenjacket. The issue is now a circus. The true message is lost.
