Blue Raiders even the score

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Middle Tennessee used an eight-run fourthinning to break open a 2-1 game to race to a 10-4 win over MemphisWednesday at Reese Smith Field. The Tigers fall 11-21 with theloss, while Middle Tennessee improves to 14-18.

It took Memphis just four batters to get on the board in thefirst inning. Chad House led off the game with a well-placed buntsingle and then stole second. Cleanup hitter Kurt Welch came upwith a clutch two-out RBI to centerfield to score House fromsecond.

Middle scored a single run to tie the game at one in the secondwhen Carroll, who doubled to leftfield and advanced to third on aJosh Archer groundball to first, scored on a wild pitch by MichaelNovarese.

Memphis again gained the advantage at 2-1 after Welch doubledand Brent Dlugach followed with a double to score Welch.

The Blue Raiders took a commanding 9-2 lead plating eight runsin the home half of the fourth inning. Middle sent 13 batters tothe plate and collected five runs on six singles before NateJaggers delivered the big blow with a towering three-run blast overthe leftfield wall.

The Tigers retaliated with a two-run fifth to close the gap to9-4. Kevin House led off the frame with sharp single up the middleand was followed by a single to left by Welch. After a double stealby K. House and Welch, senior Kyle Sledd came through with a clutchtwo-out single down the rightfield line to score both runners.However, Memphis was unable to cross another run.

MT tacked on a run in the sixth for the final 10-4 tally.

Welch led Memphis going 4-for-4 with an RBI single and two runsscored. Sledd chipped in two RBI and freshman Bill Moss added a2-for-3 effort in the loss.

Jaggers, who went 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs, paced theBlue Raiders. Freshman second baseman and Cordova High product JeffBeachum collected three hits, as did first baseman Josh Archer.

Michael Novareses (1-5) was saddled with the loss for Memphis,while Shay Horseman (3-2) picked up the win for the BlueRaiders.

The Tigers now prepare for a three-game conference set with EastCarolina beginning on April 11, in Greenville, NC.
