Today I looked in The Daily Helmsman (April 8) and I wasappalled and disgusted as I read Andrew McGarrity's ignorantcomments on Affirmative Action and his display of prices for theirbake sale Whites $1, Asians 75 cents, Blacks 35 cents, andHispanics 20 cents .
What Andrew McGarrity failed to display were lower prices forwomen and whites aswell.
Affirmative Action does not just aid ethnic minorities. It isfor every minority.
I attended a historically black university where preferenceswere made for whites over African-Americans in order to increasewhite admissions to the university .
Mr. McGarrity painted a one-sided picture of Affirmative Actionmaking it look as if ethnic minorities are trying to get over.
He made no comments or statements on how it relates to women orwhites.
Andrew McGarrity states that he believed that Affirmative Actionwas necessary at one time but it is not necessary right now.
The problem with his comment is that things really have notchanged, and there is still a huge disparity in education andopportunities for minorities.
People like Andrew McGarrity and The University of MemphisCollege Republicans are the reason that Affirmative Action isneeded today. Even if Affirmative Action had never beenimplemented, a minority still would not be good enough or qualifiedenough for them.
No matter how Mr. McGarrity tries to dress up his opinion ofAffirmative Action everyone will see it for what it is --racism.
