New and emerging technologies will be on display at a one-dayexhibition featuring a wide array ranging from artificialintelligence to a glimpse of the next generation Internet.
"Based on the marketing we've done, we're expecting 500 to 2,000people," said Sandy Schaeffer, associate director for the FedExTechnology Institute.
"Emerging Technologies for Higher Education" will take placeApril 2 in the banquet room of The University of Memphis HolidayInn on Central Avenue from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The FedEx Technology Institute and the division of InformationSystems are teaming up to host the event. Exhibitions are free andopen to the public and will showcase more than 40 presenters from avariety of education technology fields.
The exhibition will give providers of educational technologies,including industry and academic researchers, an opportunity toshowcase the newest advances in technology that are changing thenature of education.
A regional Internet2 event, "The Internet2 Community: Researchand Education in Tennessee," will take place on the same day. Itwill provide attendees with a peek into the future of theInternet.
The two events will include remarks from U of M PresidentShirley Raines, and Jim Phillips, executive director of the FedExTechnology Institute.
"The University of Memphis has invested significantly ineducational technologies over the past few years. This event willoffer the community at large an opportunity to share in thelearning experience from which our campus has benefited throughthese investments and through the innovation of our faculty," saidJames Penrod, vice president and CIO at The U of M.
"It will also provide a glimpse of what the FedEx TechnologyInstitute will bring to this region when it becomes operationalnext Fall," Penrod said.
The presenters scheduled to attend specialize in distancelearning, IP-based video-conferencing, Web-based course managementtools, artificial intelligence, smart-board classroom equipment andportable wireless devices.
Each booth at the exhibition will feature an educator and atechnology provider who will be available to demonstrateeducational applications and to discuss the technology. This willgive attendees a unique opportunity to ask questions of Universityclients and manufacturers of the technology.
All students and faculty are invited to attend.
