Law school plans minority workshop to inform students about law profession

In recognition of National Minority Law School Recruitment Month (NMLS), the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law at The University of Memphis is holding a law school workshop for minorities.

The goal of this annual event is to help high school and college minority students become aware of the possibility of careers in law.

The seminar will detail the requirements for law school admissions and provide information about the law school experience and the legal profession.

The Law School Workshop will be held Saturday, Feb. 22 at the law school, room 252. The check-in time is 8:30 a.m., and the program will last until noon.

The seminar will also have professional attorneys, current law students and practicing attorneys from the Memphis area who will answer questions on different legal topics.

NMLS Recruitment Month is sponsored by the Humphreys School of Law, the Tennessee Institute for Pre-Law (TIP) and the Law School Admissions Council.

Assistant Dean of Student Affairs at The U of M and Director of TIP Yolanda Ingram said anyone could attend the workshop in order to learn and understand the different aspects of careers in law.

“Anyone can be present at the workshop for several reasons such as to get informed on the career choice of being a lawyer, understand the functions from lawyers for personal reasons and know some of the basic legal terminology,” Ingram said.

Ingram said the Cecil C. Humphrey School of Law has a large and diverse legal community that provides opportunities for law students by mentoring relationships with seasoned legal practitioners.

“The U of M School of Law has a wide range of professional lawyers and professors that will do anything to help those interested in being a lawyer at the seminar,” Ingram said.

TIP Administrative Assistant Ida Holmes said this seminar will direct law students in the right path, providing information on how to enroll in law school.

“I feel this seminar will be great for those interested in law,” Holmes said, “because students need to know more about the admissions process, Law School Admission Test and the completion of enrollment.”

Reservations are required to attend the seminar. Call 678-2528 to reserve a seat.
