Some students nutty over campus squirrels

While students attend The University of Memphis temporarily, squirrels have made the campus their permanent home.

Many students enjoy seeing and watching squirrels, but some are annoyed by the enormous squirrel population on campus.

Sophomore Antonique Reeves said she had no choice but to laugh when a baby squirrel ran across her feet while she was going to her calculus class.

“I was going to my calculus class; I saw a cute baby squirrel with a nut in its mouth,” Reeves said. “I had to pass it in order to get to calculus, and the little joker ran across my feet. But it was so cute, I had to laugh it off.”

Freshman Krystalyn Ingram said the squirrels don’t bother her.

“As long as they don’t bother or harass me, everything will be OK,” Ingram said.

Senior Shayla Greene said ever since she started at The U of M, the squirrels have been there too.

“I am used to them now,” Greene said. “But sometimes you have to let them know that it’s your space too.”

Junior Julia Pillow had an interesting experience with a squirrel on campus.

“I was walking past a garbage can, and I heard a noise,” Pillow said. “Then the squirrel leaped out, and I screamed because it scared me. But it was too cute to get mad.”

Junior Brooke Cranfield said the squirrels brighten up her day every time she sees them.

“I love seeing the squirrels,” Cranfield said. “They make my day when I walk to my dorm. They’re so adorable.”

Senior Elaine Willis noticed the large population of squirrels on campus.

“It seems as if they reproduce everyday because it’s too many of them, and I am getting sick of them,” she said.

Different students have different opinions about the squirrels, but many U of M students like the squirrels.

“They make me smile; they’re so adorable,” junior Leigh Ann Ticer said. “Especially the little chipmunks.”
