Mynders Hall gets much-needed attention

The physical plant, residence life, and maintenance are making sure Mynders Hall residents are not having any more problems in their dormitory.

The physical plant is fixing the mold in the dorm rooms, maintenance is fixing the electric wiring coming out the phone sockets and the carpentry department is fixing peeling paint and broken doors. Energy and Environmental Manager Charlie Black said his crew takes their job seriously especially when it involves The University of Memphis students. Their job is making the campus safe enough for students to live in.

“We take mold seriously because we want mold to stay outside where it belongs instead of it growing in the residence rooms,” Black said. “Fixing these problems is a team effort not only with other crew members of the physical plant, but also with maintenance. Together we serve all faculty and students.”

Black said mold is everywhere and usually grows in moist areas such as outside.

“We find the problem, see how we can solve it, and fix the situation the best we know how,” Black added. “We use the best equipment to kill mold and the re-growth of mold.”

Black said Mynders Hall is old and is likely to have mold, but age of the dorm is not the main factor, it’s the water leakage. Black said because Mynders is an old dorm, mold will build up when moisture or water is in the air or a certain area.

“Mynders is the oldest dorm, it’s going to have some type of mold. It can occur where water is located to food left out.”

Black said the problems would be fixed when the physical plant receives a work order from the maintenance.

“Students need to fill out a work order report for any situation they may have and it will get to us or maintenance and we will correct the problem because we put students first.”

Maintenance said they are doing their best to correct each problem Mynders residents are having. Maintenance wants residents to continue to be patient with them because the problems will be fixed. Black said Mynders is a safe dorm to live in besides the small problems. The problem will be fixed as soon as possible by physical plant and maintenance.

“I feel Mynders is a safe dorm for people to live in,” Black said. “We are here to fix the problems and we are going to do our best to satisfy all residence on campus.”

Physical plant manager Drew Schmitz said it’s the physical plant’s job to make sure students are living safe in their dorms, classrooms and other locations on campus.

“Our number one priority is the students,” Schmitz said. “We feed of the students’ needs and attend to their situations and solve the problems, especially if it is related to their health. We are here to make things better, not worse.”
