The Highland Hundred (HH) has donated funds to have the leaping Tiger logo placed on Rex Dockery Field in the Liberty Bowl for the Tigers nationally televised game against Louisville tonight.
After the Liberty Bowl and The University of Memphis came to an agreement allowing the school to paint the logo on the field, the HH began raising the money to pay for it.
Mark Crihfield, a past president and current Chairman of the Highland Hundred, said, “When R.C. (Johnson) said we needed to get this done, I contacted Randy McClain (the current HH president) and we worked together to get this done.”
The base price for painting the logo was $3,000, but with some reinforcements the price will be higher. It will be the first time the logo has appeared on the field since 1993. Two Conference USA logos will also be painted on the field.
HH President Randy McClain said, “It is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time and I know a lot of Tigers fans want it. It establishes the Rex Dockery Field and the Liberty Bowl as Tigers country.”
Putting the Tiger logo on the field has drawn some positive reviews from students as well.
Senior political science major Will Radford, said, “We have a great looking logo, one we should be proud of. A chance to put it on the field for all the nation to see is not an opportunity you can put a price on. I think it should be there for every game.”
There are no plans to have the logo on the field for any other game. Liberty Bowl and Park Commission officials have cited that the painting on the field would do damage to the sod because of the sand base.
