2002 Health forum comes to U of M

Students and faculty interested in health care issues will have a chance to hear opinions from top CEOs and policy makers in the field this week.

The University of Memphis will hold the 2002 Fall Health Forum Oct. 25 at the Faulkner Lounge from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Co-sponsored by the Mid-South Health Care Executives and the Masters of Health Administration program at The U of M, the forum will address current issues facing the health care community.

“We hope to bring the community to our campus and to introduce students to outside health executives,” said David Burchfield, assistant professor of health finance.

The keynote speaker is Dean Rosen, minority staff director for the Senate Subcommittee on Public Health and policy advisor to Sen. Bill Frist, R-Tenn.

“We are extremely happy to have Mr. Rosen speak at the forum,” Burchfield said. “He knows more about pending health care issues in Congress than anyone else.”

Two panels will discuss contemporary health care issues and field questions from the audience.

The morning panel will consist of CEOs from urban and rural hospitals. They will discuss the unique problems their hospitals face. Capt. Richard Buck, commanding officer of the Naval Hospital in Pensacola, Fla., will address issues at federal and Department of Defense hospitals.

The afternoon panel will include health care executives from health insurers, physician groups and medical device manufacturers. They will explain problems concerning non-hospital organizations.

Cristie Travis, CEO of Memphis Business Group on Health, will discuss the Leapfrog initiative and hospital safety.

“Leapfrog is a consortium of employers that encourages hospitals to provide safer care for patients and overall safety at the workplace,” Burchfield said.

The price of the forum is $15 and includes a continental breakfast and lunch.
