For students who are soon to graduate or graduating in the near future, have probably thought of continuing their education by entering graduate school.
Some students are taking that extra step because of accomplishments after graduate school.
Senior at the University of Memphis Kymberlie Jackson said, “Graduating from the University of Memphis will be a great, but graduating from a graduate school will be an honor.”
Gloria Wyatt, who is employed in the Graduate School admissions department said, Graduate School is exposed to anyone holding a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Wyatt added, “Applicants should have completed undergraduate or graduate work of ample quality and to allow them to successfully pursue graduate study.”
The U of M Graduate School admissions department said, “The basic objectives of the Graduate School are to preserve and disseminate knowledge, to extend knowledge through research and prepare men and women to assume responsible and useful roles in a changing society.”
Wyatt stated the general instructions for students apply to Graduate School.
Before filling out an application make sure you know the final deadline, complete application with the non-refundable fee, have official transcripts of graduate and undergraduate credits sent by each institution the applicant has attended.
A student’s grade point average must be at least a 3.0.
Official scores from admissions test must be sent directly to Graduate Admissions. Test used by various programs at the University are the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).
Students should check with the specific program to see which test is required for their desired area of study.
Example of the minimum requirements from the Biology program at the U of M to enter graduate school is an overall minimum grade point average of 2.75 at the undergraduate level, two letters of recommendation, scores for the Graduate Record Examination and a minimum of 500 on both the verbal and quantitative portions of the general component of the GRE is usually competitive, student must have satisfactorily completed (“C” or better) five of the nine main courses, and student must have satisfactorily completed (“C or better) five of the nine main courses.
Program Requirement (Thesis) requires a minimum of 30 semester hours beyond the baccalaureate degree is required, the maintenance of a grade point average of 3.0, attendance at departmental seminars is mandatory, pass a written examination covering subject matter designated by the advisory committee, presentation of research and thesis as approved by the student’s Advisory Committee, and pass a final oral examination.
Program Requirement (Non-Thesis) requires a minimum of 36 semester hours of graduate courses is required, attendance at departmental seminars is mandatory, the maintenance of a minimum grade point average of 3.0, and pass a final written and oral examination which will be administered by the student’s Advisory committee during the final semester of residence.
Charlene Gilmore, senior graduating this fall said, “ To my fellow classmen that are graduating this fall and wants to go to graduate school make sure that you study for the GRE exam early as possible, get information together and good luck.”
