U of M copy center offers variety of services

Binding, copying, labeling, hole-punching and stapling are possible — and no, it’s not at Kinko’s. The University of Memphis Copy Center offers these and more options to students and faculty.

The copy center is located in Room 191 of the Administration Building, the part of the building closest to the Tiger Den. Trying to find it by entering the front of the Administration Building is nearly impossible.

The staff of the copy center is excited about news of their services getting out, because they realize that many students do not know that there’s a copy center on campus.

The copy center is staffed with two full-time workers and one temporary worker. It is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

There are nine copiers for use at the copy center — two are walk-up copiers for student use, and the remaining seven are for more complex work done by the staff.

“The copy center is very convenient, and the employees are very helpful,” said Latiffiny Perry, a junior nursing student. “I use it twice a week.”

Greg Williams, a staff member at the copy center, says the mornings are normally the busiest with about 10 students coming in every morning. Williams said there are also copy machines available in the library for student use.

The center offers free hole-punching and stapling. Other services include printing color copies from disks, selling resume paper and making color copies, transparencies and labels.

The copy center also does work for different departments. Williams says the center gets copy orders from one to 20,000. There are no restrictions on copying.

“Whatever you want, we can do it,” Williams said. “If we can’t do it, we’ll let you know.”

We get lots of art students and nursing students to come in and we have our regulars,” he added.

Many students do not have cars and cannot leave campus to make copies.

“A lot of students don’t have time to go to Kinko’s,” said staff member Brandi Taylor. “It (the copy center) is really convenient and it’s less expensive.

“A lot of professors and faculty come over here and make tests and other copies for class.”

The copy center uses a Diebold Value Terminal or DBT payment system. If students use their University ID, regular copies cost 7 cents. However, without an ID they cost 20 cents. The machine only accepts bills but not coins.

The center will be moving above the new bookstore, but a date for this move has not been released.
