Joe T. Bond, director of purchasing at The University of Memphis, served The University for more than 30 years.
During his time at The U of M, Mr. Bond worked with the student services division as assistant director of the University Center before becoming the director of purchasing.
Mr. Bond died Tuesday from complications related to a heart attack he suffered on Sept. 7.
“He’ll be sorely missed because we worked together for over 30 years,” said John Cothern, assistant vice president of business and finance administration.
Those working in the purchasing department expect things to be hard for a while, mostly because Mr. Bond’s death was so sudden.
“He always had a smile on his face, and you could talk to him about anything,” said Jim Nabors, assistant director of purchasing.
Nabors had known Mr. Bond since 1972 and started working with him in 1989.
Most of Mr. Bond’s co-workers remember him for the nice things that he did for them. They remember him making gestures of kindness, and he often brought snacks and candy for those who worked with him.
“He just loved The University,” said Cathy Cook, purchasing assistant.
Cook said that Mr. Bond was the reason that she had stayed with The University for 13 years.
Mr. Bond’s love of The U of M was evident in the time that he dedicated to the school. He was also active in regional and national chapters of the National Association of Educational Buyers. Most recently, he chaired the E-Commerce sub committee for the Tennessee Board of Regents Buyer’s Council.
“It is going to be hard to replace that kind of experience,” Cothern said.
Mr. Bond graduated from The U of M with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He held several certifications in his field including the Accredited Purchasing Professional and a lifetime certification of Certified Purchasing Manager.
