Interview skills often deciding factor in securing dream job

A successful interview is often the determining factor in securing a job or being shown the door.

The difference between just a job and your career is clearly evident through the interview process.

Interview skills are detrimental in the search for employment, said U of M career and employment services director, Clay Woemmel.

“Interview skills are absolutely crucial to employment,” Woemmel said.

“And even though the resume gets you the interview, that alone will not get you the job.”

It’s what you do in the interview that is essential.

The purpose of an interview is for the person and the employer to become acquainted.

Communication also plays a key factor in your success, said career counselor,

Tanya Misner Letourneau.

“You have to converse, donít let the interview turn into an interrogation,” Letourneau said. “Answer the interviewers questions thoroughly, but also ask questions throughout the process.”

According to the career and employment services guide, it is necessary for candidates to be well prepared.

The candidate should be able to discuss their educational and work experience and not underestimate their competition.

Woemmel said, going over your resume the night before is a good idea.

Most people tend to be modest about their accomplishments, not wanting to blow their own horn. This causes them to be seen differently than as portrayed in their resume. The applicant should want to appear knowledgeable, yet be comfortable at the same time.

Another important aspect is to research the company prior to the interview. If there is one thing employers hate, it is when you ask what their company is about, Woemmel added.

Appearance is also very important. Having a professional and conservative appearance shows employers your seriousness, Woemmel said.

“Men should wear a matching navy or gray suit, white shirt and a silk (blend) tie,” Woemmel said. “Women should wear a skirt or pantsuit and closed-toe shoes.”

You should always think about little details, no dangling jewelry, no visible body piercings. Men should remove earrings and be clean shaven, shoes should be polished and fingernails should be neat.

“In addition, practice paying attention to your non-verbal communication. Be careful about your gestures and remember to maintain good eye-contact,” Woemmel said.

Practicing and preparing will help the interview process run more smoothly,

but if additional help is needed the Career and Employment Services office has a variety of things to further prepare you, Woemmel explained.
