Health Admin. holds seminar

The University of Memphis Division of Health

Administration is holding a two-week leadership seminar for Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare.

To advance the skills of Methodist Le Bonheur managers, The Division of Health Administration designed the Maurice Elliott Leadership Institute Curriculum.

Twenty middle-level managers attended the seminar’s first weeklong part this week and will complete the second week in December.

“This week is more of a pilot program,” said Dr. Paul Fitzgerald, associate professor and director of health administration.

Fitzgerald said this is a great opportunity for The U of M to be more involved with the community. The program developed after the Methodist Healthcare Foundation gave a $1 million gift to the Division of Health Administration.

“We developed a curriculum with the core competencies needed for leadership roles in the 21st century,” Fitzgerald said.

Dr. Raines welcomed the guests Monday. She is in favor of community collaboration and is pleased with this program, Fitzgerald said.

“We’re thrilled because this is a prime example of the type of things that happen when organizations like The U of M and Methodist collaborate,” Fitzgerald said.

“I think it’s going great,” said Rob Sanders, director of organizational management for Methodist.

“It is running smoothly,” he said. “We’ve had great initial feedback.”

Sanders said the program benefits both institutions by helping develop intellectual capital.

“The research base that The U of M team brings our leaders provides huge opportunities and depth of knowledge,” Sanders said. “It’s a real vibrant exchange of information.”

There will be two seminars this year and three in 2003.

The final speaker will be Maurice Elliott, CEO Emeritus of Methodist Healthcare.
