Daily activities offered by Project Leadership conference

Student leaders and those who have not quite emerged as leaders yet will have a chance to participate in a weeklong leadership conference next week at The University of Memphis. Sponsored by the Emerging Leaders Program and Student Activities Co-Sponsorship, Project Leadership will be held on campus Sept. 30-Oct. 5.

The theme of the project is “Paving the Way to Connect Our Campus Leaders,” according to project Chairman Alvin Bonds, II. Bonds said the project’s mission is “to provide a forum through which a diverse group of students can develop personal leadership skills and learn from the leadership of peers.”

The vision of the project is to promote communication, respect, unity, participation and teamwork, Bonds added.

As recipients of Emerging Leadership scholarships, the students involved in Project Leadership are required to give back to The University.

“But we wanted to go all out this year, instead of just doing the minimum requirements,” Bonds said.

Project participants can attend a week of discussions and entertaining activities.

Don Carson, U of M vice president for student affairs, will discuss how leadership relates to the campus community in the Rose Theatre Monday at 8 p.m.

Laurie Tucker, senior vice president of global marketing for FedEx Corporation, will discuss how leadership relates to the business community in the Faulkner Lounge Tuesday at 8 p.m.

The student leader discussion panel will discuss “Breaking Barriers” in the Faulkner Lounge Wednesday at 7 p.m.

“The panel discussion is for students to put into action what they’ve learned from the previous nights,” Bonds said.

All students who attend the panel discussion will receive a T-shirt, according to Bonds.

Thursday’s events will include dinner and a showing of the movie “Signs” in the Rose Theatre at 6 p.m.

Titile Keskessa and a host of dancers will perform “World of Dance” at the Rose Theatre on Friday at 6 p.m.

“The show will have different kind of dances like Ethiopian and Asian,” Bonds said. “It will be a mix of everything.”

The conference’s closing events Saturday include Service on Saturday and is followed by mudball organized by the Student Ambassador Board.

“For Service on Saturday, students can sign up to work at different places such as Big Brothers Big Sisters or the Humane Society,” Bonds said.

Mudball will take place on Tiger Beach at Richardson Towers at noon.

Each night’s events will include drawings for door prizes, and events are open and free to students. Six-person teams participating in mudball have to pay a $165 entry fee.

Bonds said Project Leadership might become an annual event.

“We want to see how well this year goes over, and then maybe we’ll try to make it a yearly event,” Bonds said.
