Tuition procrastinators will be dropped from courses

The University of Memphis is reverting to its previous policy regarding tuition payment. Beginning this fall, students who have not paid tuition by the Friday before classes begin will be dropped from their courses.

As part of a two-year pilot program, U of M students were allowed to pay tuition after the deadline with a late fee, but Tennessee Higher Education Commission has decided The University will revert to dropping courses that have not been paid by deadline.

“The board did not continue to give their approval of the pilot program,” said Noel Schwartz, academic registrar at The U of M.

Schwartz said her office has been trying to notify students of the policy change so it does not surprise them in the fall.

“We are mailing out notices and posting messages on TigerWeb and STRIPES about the change,” Schwartz said.

This fall, however, students will be given some leniency regarding fee payment, Schwartz said. The U of M will notify students that their classes will be dropped prior to canceling their enrollment.

“We hope to have the new procedures in place and in full effect by the fall of 2003,” Schwartz said.

Schwartz said The University canceled enrollment of as many as 1,200 students per semester before the pilot program began two years ago.
