Police Beat Aug. 8-19, 2011

Thursday, August 8

2:29 p.m.

A student working out in the Student Recreation and Fitness Center had his wallet stolen from his gym bag after leaving it in a padlocked locker. He returned at 2:26 p.m. to find the locker pried open with the lock still on. His gym bag was missing, but later found without the wallet. He stated that the wallet contained $60, an ATT Universal Mastercard, a First South Credit Union Visa card, his U of M student I.D. card and his Tennessee driver's license. The student could not remember the account numbers.

Thursday, August 8

2:49 p.m.

A burglary occurred in Smith Hall before 10:00 a.m. after the door had been secured the night before. A graduate assistant found that one of the Silicon Graphics computers missing. The computer is valued at $10,000.

Saturday, August 10

10:46 a.m.

A bike was stolen out of The Fogelman College of Business and Economics when its owner left it unattended for six hours on August 9. The student did not secure the bike, and left it on the fourth floor hallway of thebuilding. Total estimated loss is $125

Sunday, August 11

7:37 p.m.

After going on vacation, a student returned to find the center caps of her hub caps missing. The attending officer checked out the vehicle and found nothing else missing and no other damage. Total value is $30.

Monday, August 12

1:58 p.m.

A trailer was stolen out of the Richardson Towers parking lot between 4:30 p.m. Friday and Monday morning. The last person to use the trailor chained and padlocked it to a light pole. He noticed it missing early Monday, but thought a co-worker was using it. The chain and padlock were undamaged. Residence Life was written on the side rails of the trailor. Total estimated loss: $600.

Monday, August 12

3:33 p.m.

A student had her wallet stolen out of her bookbag after leaving it unattended for 15 minutes. She said she did not notice it missing until she reached the Memphis Internationl Airport. All her credit cards were cancelled, and no charges were made on them. The remaining items in the wallet are valued at $450.

Tuesday, August 13

11:02 a.m.

A student filed a complaint with police about his roommate assaulting him. The roommate began to scream and curse after being confronted about a broken videocassette recorder. The victim was eventually pushed by his roommate. He does not wish to prosecute at this time.

Tuesday, August 13

5:23 p.m.

Officers were called to the loading dock of Richardson Towers South after a carjacking. The student noticed two black males in their late teens coming from the south entrance. He then entered the building through the loading dock at the southwest corner. When he exited the building, the two men approached him. While one subject pointed a pistol at the student, the other demanded his keys. The student threw the keys in front of the man with the gun and ran through some bushes in the area. The suspects took off with the student's 2001 GMC Yukon. The vehicle is worth $34,231.

Wednesday, August 14

10:42 p.m.

When a student went to wash his clothes and get his glasses fixed, his room was burglarized. He was missing some electronic equipment. The student said only one other person had a key, and he has never seen that person in the dorm. Total loss: $805

Thursday, August 15

8:32 a.m.

Two Dell computers were taken from the psychology building in the midst of transporting them. A total of 10 computers were delivered Aug. 6. The computer technician noticed them missing between 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. The lab they were in is alarmed, but the alarm is turned off during normal business hours. There were no signs of forced entry. The computers are worth $3,200.

Friday, August 16

2:15 a.m.

An officer was called to South Campus regarding the break-in of a vehicle. The student parked her vehicle at 8 p.m. in the Robert Everett Cove lot. She returned at 1:50 a.m. to find damage to the interior panel and her CD player missing. There were signs of forced entry around the rubber molding on the right-side passenger window. Loss is valued at $325.

Friday, August 16

8:55 a.m.

A student flagged down an officer after having his front left tire stolen. He parked his car the night before and came back the following morning to find the tire gone. His left door latch was broken as well, but nothing was missing inside the car.

Monday, August 19

9:35 p.m.

An officer responded to a call on Central Avenue after a student called about her room being burglarized. She said she left her room around 12:30 p.m., and when she got back at 7:30 p.m., she noticed that some things had been moved. A camcorder and cell phone were missing. The student found her phone in the room connected to hers. A serial number was not provided for the camcorder. Total estimated lost is $1,500.
