New York City released six preliminary plans Tuesday for the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site, including the building of both a permanent memorial to the thousands who died as a result of the September 11 attacks as well as the 1993 bombing. The plans also include the building of four to six office towers with 32 to 85 stories and 600,000 square feet of retail space.
The rebuilding proposals are:
• a 5-acre memorial triangle with a pavilion built on one of the towers’ footprints
• a 10-acre memorial square framed by 10-story buildings topped with gardens and connected by a continuous public walkway
• an 8-acre memorial plaza surrounded by memorial buildings leaving the footprints as open spaces
• a 6-acre memorial park built on a deck above West Street leaving the footprints partially covered
• a 4-acre memorial garden with a memorial in the southwest corner and the footprints left as open spaces
• a memorial promenade: a large oval deck built above West Street with a promenade leading to Battery Park with trees or plants on either side in memory of each victim and leaving the footprints partially covered
The six proposals will be narrowed to three in October before a final decision is made at the end of the year.
