University of Memphis defensive lineman Albert Means was declared academically ineligible for the 2002 season last week.
A former prep All-American defensive tackle from Memphis’ Trezevant High School, Means made major sporting news after allegedly being sold by his high school coach to the University of Alabama two years ago.
Means transferred to Memphis last season and started seven games, logging 51 tackles, including four for lost yardage, and added one quarterback sack and one pass interception.
"I am disappointed that the team will be without Albert," head coach Tommy West said. "I have strongly encouraged him to continue to work towards regaining his eligibility for the 2003 season.
"But our team is waiting for no one and we are moving in a very positive direction. I can assure you that the players and coaches are looking forward to the start of the season."
Means failed to meet minimum academic requirements during the 2001-02 school year and is currently attending summer school at The U of M in an attempt to regain his eligibility for the 2003 season.
