2 Tigers get preseason honors

When the Tiger football team begins play this fall, the offense will boast two preseason All-Conference USA Team members.

Running back Dante Brown and center Jimond Pugh were selected by The Football News recently as the best players in the conference at their respective positions.

Brown, a senior who transferred to The University of Memphis from Middle Georgia College, led all Tigers last season with 902 rushing yards, the fourth-highest rushing total in school history. He also scored a team-high 12 touchdowns, including a school-record four in one game against Houston, and was named second team All-Conference USA by conference coaches after the 2001 season.

Pugh, who has started 22 consecutive games, will begin his senior season with more starts than any active player on the team. The 6-3, 298-pound lineman has played over 1,400 snaps for Memphis in the past two seasons and has become the foundation for the Tiger offensive line. Pugh was also named preseason All-Conference USA by league coaches last month.
