University Center director Jay Anderson says he knows firsthand just how slippery the skywalks linking Rose Theatre and Zach Curlin parking garage to the UC can become when wet.
“The first time I hit a slippery spot, I was coming out the entrance of the UC,” Andersen said. “I hit the walkway and the aluminum place. I slipped on it. I knew we needed to do something about it.”
According to Lori White, Physical Plant communications specialist, something has been done. Earlier this week, a non-slip composite was applied to the skywalk floor between the theater and the garage. White also said plans have been made to make the other skywalk safer.
“What happens is the skywalks are made of porcelain tile, and they’re on an incline,” White said. She added the walkways become slick anytime rain, snow or ice builds up on them. That has led to several complaints being filed with her department.
White said Physical Plant hopes to have corrected the problem by applying the non-stick composite to the walkway between the UC and the garage. As an additional safety measure, handrails have been installed along the walkways.
