The Art Museum of The University of Memphis’ new exhibit “TWENTY @ 20” celebrates the Museum’s 20th anniversary with works by 20 artists previously featured at AMUM.
“We tried to get a variety of media, a variety of local and international, men and women,” Director of AMUM Leslie Luebbers said. “We’ve tried to get a cross-section of people who have shown here.”
According to Luebbers, the 20 artists featured in the anniversary exhibition are the most memorable of those artists who the museum had shown during past solo exhibitions.
Of the chosen 20, nine are local, two are European and several are nationally recognized artists. Among them is photographer William Eggleston.
“William Eggleston is incredibly well-known,” Luebbers said. “He’s probably one of the one or two most famous photographers alive.”
Also part of the current exhibition are works by four artists who have been U of M staff. Among them is Dick Knowles, who recently left the University and whose work was featured at AMUM in 1982, when it opened.
All together, “TWENTY @ 20” shows more than forty pieces of art of different media.
According to Luebbers, who has been at The U of M Art Museum for 12 years, the exhibit is evidence of the diverse mix of artists and art work that have been housed inside AMUM.
“It really looks spectacular,” Luebbers said. “It’s really very gratifying to bring these things back together.”
“TWENTY @ 20” runs through Sept. 7 and is free to U of M students.
