Women's tennis a loser

Memphis will face the loser of today’s Marquette/Saint Louis match for 11th place on Saturday after falling into the consolation bracket of the Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championship in Fort Worth, Texas.

The ninth-seeded Lady Tigers lost, 4-1, Thursday to eighth-seeded Cincinnati in the opening round of the tourney, dropping Memphis to 5-15 overall and into Saturday’s consolation bracket.

The Bearcats (10-11) seized control from the Tigers by taking two of the three doubles matches for the early 1-0 lead.

Tigers Sabrina Lindemann and Monica Gonzalez-Gordo improved their doubles record to 18-2 on the season after beating Cincy’s Lyndsey Molony and Khushchehr Italia, 8-2, at No. 1, forcing Cincinnati to win the final two doubles matches.

The Bearcats rallied for the point with an 8-6 win over Memphis’ Sumitra Rao and Annika Westberg and an 8-1 victory over Rebecca Garner and Laura Hughes.

The Lady Tigers earned their lone point of the day on Lindemann’s 6-3, 6-2 win over Cristina Reyes in singles.
