Tigers hone skills at annual game

Showing that he intends to be the Tigers’ starting quarterback when practice resumes in the fall, Danny Wimprine threw for 252 yards and three touchdowns Saturday to lead a potent Memphis offense in the annual Blue-Gray Scrimmage at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.

Wimprine, who was named game MVP, completed 20-of-28 passes, including a 28-yard TD to tight end Jeff Cameron and a 52-yard score to receiver Travis Anglin.

A converted quarterback, the 6-4 Anglin caught six balls for 141 yards and two TDs, showing he perhaps may be the big-play threat the Tigers missed last season.

Dante Brown, the Tigers’ starter at running back last year, fumbled twice on the day on nine carries for just 13 yards. LSU transfer Derron Parquet, although running against a second-team defense, looked much more comfortable Saturday, rushing for 58 yards on nine carries, including a dazzling 27-yarder up the right sideline.

On defense, linebacker Robert Douglas had a monster day with two violent sacks and one fumble recovery he returned 13 yards.
