The University of Memphis Student Government Association held its final meeting for the spring semester last Thursday, and passed several bills concerning students and The U of M campus.
Among the bills passed was an act “to send personalized written invitations to administrators encouraging them to attend SGA meetings” next year. The bill states that because administrators have the ability to make bills that have been passed effectively, and they do not know what happens during SGA meetings, they should attend in order to aid the SGA in their common goal of helping the student body.
The SGA also passed a bill concerning parking near the University Center. According to the bill, students who spend 10 or more hours a week working at the UC for minimal or no pay, such as office workers, should not have to pay for parking during that time. A log would have to be kept of the hours students who work in the UC, then sent to parking services to propose these students be allowed to park in the UC garage free of charge.
Another bill was passed concerning the campus radio station, WUMR FM 91.7. The station currently plays jazz music, but the SGA’s bill suggested that a poll be taken to determine what kinds of music the student body would like to hear on the station. The issue would then be taken up with those running the station.
The SGA also passed a bill requesting that the Rawls computer lab’s hours of operation be changed to 12 a.m. to 12 p.m. so that the women living in the residence hall will not have to walk outside after dark to go to the campus computer labs.
Students who want to wear their Greek letters on their sashes at graduation ceremonies have the backing of the SGA, which passed a bill last week requesting that students be allowed to do so.
“The Greek community contributes greatly to the betterment of our University,” the bill reads, adding “this recognition is available on many other campuses.”
According to SGA senator Justin Waugh, the flag of The United States is not lighted during hours of darkness as flag etiquette requires.
The SGA passed a bill requesting the bushes around the light be trimmed and other lights be added as necessary to properly light the flag.
Four travel bills were also passed at last week’s final meeting.
