Police Beat 3/14/02

Monday, Feb. 25, 10:45 a.m.

A student who parked her vehicle in the Richardson Towers West parking lot called The University of Memphis security after she discovered that her vehicle had been broken into. The victim said she parked her car in the dormitory parking lot the previous day and upon arriving back at her vehicle the following day, she noticed someone had broken into its vehicle. The only item the student reported missing was her U of M parking tag. The U of M parking services have been notified.

Tuesday, Feb. 26, 7:30 p.m.

A U of M staff member reported to officers that her purse was stolen from Building 2, located on South Campus. The victim told officers that her purse was stolen from her office on Feb. 25 between 3:30 and 7:00 p.m. The victim also said the building the previous day was crowded due to rehearsals. Total estimated loss was $130.

Friday, March 1, 5:35 a.m.

While on patrol, an officer witnessed a vehicle weaving between the center yellow line while traveling down Spottswood Avenue. The officer stopped the vehicle and observed a strong odor of alcohol coming from the driver. As the officer spoke with the suspect, he noticed the suspect had bloodshot, watery eyes and had several open containers of alcohol in the car. The officer then asked the driver to step out of the vehicle and take a sobriety test. The suspect failed both tests and recorded a .130 on the BAC test. The driver was then arrested and transported to 201 Poplar.

Friday, March 1, 9:55 p.m.

A female student living in Rawls Hall reported to officers that money was taken from her wallet while she was washing her clothes. The victim said she got some change from her wallet at approximately 9:00 a.m. to do her laundry. About half an hour later, the victim returned and noticed that $100 and three cigarettes were missing from her room. The victim stated that she left her room unlocked and unattended. The victim also recalled prior to doing her laundry, someone approached her and asked for a cigarette The officer then knocked on the suspect’s door but there was no response. Total estimated loss was $100.

Thursday, March 7, 5:00 p.m.

An officer responded to a theft call from parking lot 19 across from Patterson Hall. When the officer arrived at the scene, the victim said her car was missing. The victim told officers that she parked her vehicle in the lot at approximately 4 p.m. and when she returned 45 minutes later, she discovered her car was missing and some broken glass was found where her vehicle was previously parked. There was no suspect information available at this time. Total estimated loss was $3,500.

Sunday, March 10, 6:15 p.m.

A female student at the South Campus residence hall called to The U of M police after she said her boyfriend allegedly struck her. The victim told officers her boyfriend came to her apartment to visit their child when a verbal argument erupted between the two. The victim said she asked the suspect to leave but he became violent and struck the victim on the left side of her face. The suspect immediately left the apartment by foot.

Sunday, March 10, 8:00 p.m.

An officer observed a vehicle traveling eastbound on Spottswood and Echles weaving between lanes while traveling at speeds close to 50 miles per hour. The officer stopped the vehicle and noticed the driver had slurred speech and a strong smell of alcohol on his breath. The suspect was then given a sobriety test and failed. The suspect was placed under arrest. The suspect was also offered a BAC test, but declined to take it.
