Men's tennis on a role with six straight wins

What a week it was for the Tiger tennis team after winning six matches in seven days.

Memphis (10-4) closed out the week by defeating Davidson, 6-1, Friday afternoon in North Carolina for its sixth consecutive win.

The Tigers took the doubles point by sweeping the doubles matches and taking five of six singles contests.

Memphis men’s tennis head coach Phil Chamberlain said the win was a great team effort.

Juniors Ben Stapp (6-7) and Joe Schmulian (6-6) won the top two singles matches.

“Ben and Joe are playing really solid for us,” Chamberlain said.

Sophomore Lee Taylor Walker (6-5) along with seniors Richard Magney (6-6) and Michael Chamberlain (10-3) also scored singles victories.

In doubles action against Davidson (6-7) Friday, Stapp and Walker improved their record to 8-5 with an 8-5 victory over Davidson’s Rob Haywood and Donald Miles.

During the second and third doubles matches, Chamberlain and Schmulian (8-1) added a victory to their win column while freshman Alex Bucewicz and senior Michael LaHaie improved to 9-2.

Memphis is now 31-10 in doubles play. Last season, the Tigers had just 48 doubles wins the entire season, going 48-25.

Memphis currently ranks 59th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Top 75. The Tigers, though, are expected to move up even further when the new rankings are released later today.

Memphis returns to action in a big way this week with a Thursday matchup against ninth-ranked Ole Miss, which Chamberlain calls one of the Tigers’ toughest tests of the season.

“This is a big match for us,” Chamberlain said.

Memphis then heads to Irvine, Calif., for the three-day UC-Irvine Invitational, which begins next Thursday.
