Matt Woo DVD Guru 3/20/02

Zoolander is one of those films where it is so stupid, you can’t help but laugh. Although I agree with some of the critics who said the laughs are sometimes too far and between, I still found it to be an enjoyable comedy. Now that it has finally hit DVD, I am picking Zoolander as my pick of the week.

The Movie

The film revolves around the character Derek Zoolander, a male supermodel who is at his prime. Derek has won numerous awards such as the coveted male model of the year award for the past three years and is most well-known for his signature poses called Blue Steel, Ferrari, La Tigra and Magnum. The only problem, he’s an idiot.

What Derek doesn’t know is that male models are being brainwashed to carry out some of the most famous political assassinations of all time. In the film Derek gets brainwashed by the evil clothing designer named Mugatu and is set on killing the Prime Minister of Malaysia so Mugatu can continue to use child labor in other countries and keep up production of his clothing line.

To prevail over Mugatu’s evil plans, Derek must side with male model rival, and the newly crowned male model of the year, Hansel along with Time Magazine reporter Matilda.

The Video and Audio

The video is impressive although it’s nothing too different from other DVDs. The DVD is filled with bright and vibrant colors and in the words of Derek Zoolander himself it’s “Really, really, really ridiculously good looking.”

Along with the video, audio wise, Zoolander is a decent DVD. Being a comedy, the speakers really aren’t tested but all the sounds and music are clear.

The Extras

The DVD is loaded with extras. Of course, you get the now traditional audio commentary with Ben Stiller, and his co-writers Drake Sather and John Hamburg. All three are entertaining to listen to and give a lot of insight into the film.

Another extra worth looking at is the deleted scenes and the extended scenes. There are five of each and each one is mildly funny and all can be seen with or without audio commentary by Stiller.

Another extra worth checking out is the outtake section. Watching the actors blow their lines numerous times is entertaining to see. Also for fans of the song “Start the Commotion” the video is on the DVD.

Although the film does have its share of good laughs, such as the gasoline fight between Derek and his friends or Derek wanting to start the Derek Zoolander Center for Kids Who Can’t Read Good, Zoolander is not a film loaded with laughs. Although the movie could have been funnier in some parts, overall, it’s still entertaining and worth checking out.
