Snow day gives students time to relax, catch up

Students at The University of Memphis took advantage of Wednesday's snow to catch up on homework, get in some extra sleep and, of course, play outside.

Some of those living on campus built snowmen, and one group even posted a flyer for an organized snowball fight.

Allyson Clark, a freshman business management major, said a large group of students participated in a snowball fight outside of Richardson Towers South.

"We went outside at noon, and about 50 people had a snowball fight," Clark said.

Others preferred to spend the snow day inside their heated dorm rooms.

"I slept in all day," said Torrie Williams, a sophomore dance major.

Eduardo Cavacos said the only snow he saw was when he walked from his dorm to the University Center, which was closed.

"I just stayed in my room and did some homework and some things I was supposed to do last weekend," said Cavacos, a senior in civil engineering.

Although the Tiger Den was also closed, Richardson Towers was open to feed stranded students.

Despite warnings that snowy weather was coming, the announcement that U of M classes were canceled didn't come until early Wednesday morning.

Curt Guenther, assistant director for Media Relations, said the decision to cancel classes is made by the president after considering a recommendation from Bruce Harber, public safety director.

"If there are indications that the streets might become dangerous, the president makes the decision to close the school," Guenther said.

After the president makes the decision, Guenther's office calls television stations and other media outlets to alert the public of the schedule change.

Two Black History Month events scheduled for Wednesday have been postponed until a later date. Creston Lynch, the Black History Month chair, said the new dates for the Black History Quiz Bowl and the Na'im Akbar lecture will be announced soon.
