Men's soccer team apologizes for past hazing

(Editor’s note: The men’s soccer team was asked to write a letter to The Daily Helmsman as part of Judicial Affairs sanctions for hazing members during the Fall 2001 semester.)

Dear Editor:

We, the members of The University of Memphis Men’s Soccer Program, deeply regret and apologize for the incidents that occurred the night of Aug. 26, 2001.

As student athletes, we realize that our actions have represented The University and athletic program in a poor and unacceptable manner. At no point in time did we ever intend to tarnish our image as a successful unit or portray any negative images or thoughts toward the soccer program or University as a whole.

The team accepts full responsibility for those individuals involved.

Furthermore, we ensure that an incident such as this will never occur in the future.

We realize the seriousness of the situation, and we will do everything we can to cooperate with all parties involved.

As student athletes, we truly realize our impact on others as well as the community, and that we are ambassadors of The University of Memphis and its athletic program.

We hope we can put this incident behind us and move forward toward a successful season and continued success of the program.

The U of M Men’s Soccer Team
