In honor of “Jazz Week” at the U of M, I’ve chosen to feature the most renowned female jazz vocalist in history.
This week I’ve pulled “Billie Holiday’s Greatest Hits” out of my collection. Any Billie Holiday album will do, especially the ones containing songs recorded with Decca in the 4o’s.
This album features all of Holiday’s classic jazz songs.
“Easy Living,” the first track, introduces you to Billie’s unusual vocals as she sings “living for you is easy living, it’s easy to live, when you’re in love.”
She is best known for her ability to express every deep emotion through her voice.
This gift is best showcased in the songs “No More,” “Don’t Explain,” “Solitude” and “You Better Go Now.”
These songs, especially, feature the signature dipthong and crackle in her voice.
Then there’s the candid “God Bless The Child” which was co-written by Holiday.
Although “My Man” wasn’t written by Holiday, it describes much of her life. She expresses her turmoil and reliance on a man that cheats on her and beats her.
With 19 songs on this album, Holiday takes you through every possible human emotion.
It also features some great jazz musicians of that time.
It’s difficult writing this segment, because I really feel I cannot accurately express the depth and significance of this artist and all of her music.
You’ll just have to listen for yourself.
