University responds to $8.5 million discrimination lawsuit

The University of Memphis issued a written response Thursday to the $8.5 million discrimination lawsuit filed by former student Bettye Johnson.

In the response, The University said representatives worked “diligently and in good faith to address her concerns, and we believed those concerns had been resolved.”

The University said there is “no basis” for the lawsuit and that it rejects racial discrimination in any form and does “everything possible to ensure that it does not exist.”

Because litigation is pending, The University will make no further comment on the details of the lawsuit.
