In the mood for Asian stir-fry?
Craving a chicken quesadilla?
Is your mouth watering for a juicy slab of ribs?
These items and more can be found alongside old favorites like Chick-fil-a and the Memphis Market in the University Center’s cafeteria.
With new options and catchy names like Nao and Zen and The Soup Bowl, the UC cafeteria is becoming more diverse in its food choices. Instead of having potato chips or french fries to complement their meals, students can now have tortilla chips and salsa from The Mexican Market or “Wings of Fire” from Orville and Wilbur’s Wings.
The UC cafeteria, along with the Tiger Den and Richardson Towers, will also soon be offering a longtime Memphis favorite: barbecue. Memphis’ signature dish can be found beginning next week.
In addition to adding a taste of Memphis, the cafeteria, along with the Tiger Den, will be adding a taste of the backyard with grilled gourmet burgers.
Chuck Wigington, director of Food Service and Campus Dining Services, said he wants to meet the needs of all types of students.
“We don’t want to just feed people,” Wigington said. “We want them to want to eat here.”
While the expansion of food selection is noticeable, it is not the most notable addition to the cafeteria. Three computers have been placed in the dining area, and starting next week students can conveniently check their e-mail or surf the internet while they eat.
Depending on how busy the computers stay, more might be added in the future.
“If we find out that there is a line to get to three computers, I’m sure we can look at the option of putting more (in,.” Wigington said.
