I know that my “Matt Woo DVD Guru” column is only supposed to come out every Wednesday, but due to circumstances beyond my control, I had to pull double duty this week. But, with so many DVDs to choose from now, it wasn’t too hard to find another must-see movie.
For those 15 people or so who actually read my first DVD recommendation, this week, I am going to pick a movie that is slightly different from my last suggestion. This time, I choose “American Pie 2” as my second DVD pick of the week.
The Movie
It has been nearly a year since the last time we saw the American Pie group together and this time, we see them as college freshmen enjoying their last carefree summer together while planning an end of summer bash.
Throughout the movie, the characters will have you rolling on the floor laughing such as Jim’s father walking into his son’s dorm room and finding his son in a precarious position with a female or seeing the character Stiffler being accidentally doused in urine.
The entire original cast returns for the sequel including everyone’s favorite foreign exchange student Nadia and the ever annoying band camp junkie...something
The Video and Audio
As expected, neither the video or sound quality is anything to get excited about. Of course, you get the standard DVD picture clarity and audio wise, there is not too much to offer besides the choice between Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1. But, to the movie’s defense, it is a comedy and not an action flick so there is no real need for the studio to go all out in the audio and video department.
Extra Features
For any DVD collector, most will agree that there is more to DVDs than better picture quality. Most will say that the extras are what make up a great DVD. Fortunately, “American Pie 2” does not disappoint with extra features. Four audio commentaries are available including commentaries with director J.B Rogers, writer Adam Hertz, actors Jason Biggs, Mena Suvari, Thomas Ian Nicholas and Eddie Kaye Thomas.
Other extras include deleted scenes, cast out-takes, a 3 Doors Down video and “The Baking of American Pie,” a 30-minute special loaded with interviews of actors from the movie.
Also, another added bonus is being able to view classic moments from both American Pie films.
If my last DVD pick “The Fast and the Furious” wasn’t your cup of tea, grab some friends and try “American Pie 2.” I guarantee it will be time well spent.
