Fraser named to NSCAA/Adidas team

There isn’t much Tiger senior forward Sean Fraser didn’t accomplish this season, not to mention in his career.

Fraser, who ended his soccer career at The University of Memphis last month with a school-record 109 points, added one more honor to a long list when he was named to the 2001 NSCAA/Adidas All-Midwest Region second-team last week.

The Canadian-born Fraser had 45 career strikes, just four short of The U of M’s all-time scoring mark, and ranked fourth in the nation in scoring this season.

“When you think of Sean Fraser, you think of explosiveness,” head coach Richie Grant said. “You think of a player that can bring a lot to your program. There have been some great player over the years and Sean will always be on that list.”

Fraser also set the single-season record for points and goals, scoring 42 points and 18 goals this season. The Conference USA first-teamer also broke the single game record for points and goals earlier this season with 11 points and five goals in a 10-0 beating of Lipscomb.

“It’s a tremendous honor to be selected to the (All-Midwest second-team) and the All-Conference team,” Fraser said Monday.

According to his coach, there is also a possibility that Fraser will be selected to play in the Umbro All-Star Classic.

“I think he deserves to be there,” Grant said. “He has the statistics and the ability. He should get some serious recognition from the committee.”

Fraser has been contacted by some A-league teams, the minor leagues of Major League Soccer, but said he is not certain what his future holds.

“I’m not sure exactly what I’ll be doing next year, but I will be pursuing my soccer career in some way,” he said.

With the loss of Fraser, as well as Memphis’ second leading scorer, senior Lars Thorstensen, the U of M men’s soccer squad will be looking to rebuild next season.

“You look around your team and wonder where you will get your 30 goals from next season when Fraser and Thorstensen are gone,” Grant said.

Said Fraser: “It might be a rebuilding year, depending on how recruiting goes, and it’ll be tough. But the team should be OK.”

Much of next season’s success will depend on offseason recruiting, something Fraser may be able to help with.

“Just the fact that he will play at the next level will help us bring top players, who have the same goal, to our program,” Grant said.

“You’ve just got to recruit like your life depends on it.”
