Women’s Cross Country
The women’s cross country team won the 2001 ASU/Pepsi Cross Country Invitational championship at Arkansas State Saturday in Jonesboro as Memphis placed six runners in the top 10.
Lady Tiger Wendy Ragle finished second individually in a time of 20:44 behind Ole Miss runner Erin Jordan. Ragle has placed among the top three runners in three of the Tigers’ four events this season.
Men’s Cross Country
Memphis placed 21st of 25 teams competing in the 2001 Iona Meet of Champions Saturday in New Rochelle, N.Y.
Balazs Laszlo was the Tigers’ top finisher, placing 52nd in a time of 26:05. Memphis’ Hugh Ferry finished 112th in 27:09.
Volleyball
The Lady Tigers lost just their second match of the season Friday in St. Louis as the Billikens defeated Memphis, 3-2, to avenge last Tuesday’s loss to the Tigers at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
After losing the first game 30-17, Memphis (11-2, 2-2 in Conference USA) rallied for a 2-1 lead after wins of 30-28 and 30-26 in games two and three. SLU (4-6, 2-1) took the fourth game, 30-27, before closing out the Tigers, 15-13, in game five.
Memphis had defeated St. Louis 3-1 on Tuesday.
Women’s Soccer
The Lady Tiger soccer team split two conference games this weekend, winning 1-0 against DePaul Friday night before dropping a 2-0 decision to Cincinnati Sunday at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
Against Cincinnati (7-2, 4-0 in C-USA) Sunday, Memphis (3-6-1, 1-3) was shut out for the third time this season as the Bearcats got two second-half goals from midfielder Tasha Wagner and forward Amy Simonson.
On Friday at Echles Field, Memphis snapped a three-game losing streak and won its first game in C-USA play with the 1-0 win over DePaul (5-3-1, 0-2-1).
Men’s Soccer
Tiger senior forward Lars Thorstensen has been named C-USA Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals during Memphis’ first two wins of the season this weekend.
Thorstensen scored twice Sunday as Memphis (2-4-2, 1-1-1 in C-USA) dumped Vanderbilt, 4-1, at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Fellow Tigers Sean Fraser and Peter Cummings also scored for Memphis, which before Saturday had been off to its worst start in the 19-year history of U of M soccer.
On Saturday, Memphis broke into the win column for the first time this season as the Tigers edged conference foe East Carolina (4-3, 1-2), 3-2, at Mike Rose.
Women’s Tennis
The Lady Tigers opened the 2001-02 women’s tennis season at Evansville, Ind., this weekend with three Tigers advancing to the finals of the Aces’ Women’s Tennis Fall Classic.
