9:40 p.m.
An officer was dispatched to Richardson Towers’ east parking lot to meet with the Memphis Police Department. Upon arrival, the officer met with two undercover officers who had three suspects in custody on drug charges. The suspects were seen in the east parking lot smoking marijuana. Two of the suspects are students at The University and were issued misdemeanor citations. The other suspect is not a student and was placed on trespass status.
Thursday, Oct. 18
3:30 p.m.
An officer responded to a motor vehicle theft call in the parking lot of Patterson and Southern. The victim told the officer that he had parked his vehicle in the grass, near the northwest corner of the lot and when he returned to the vehicle, it was gone. Parking Services said they did not tow the vehicle. The officer did not observe any physical signs of forced entry. The victim told the officer that the doors of the vehicle were secure but the driver’s side vent window did not always secure properly. Estimated loss is $13,000.
Thursday, Oct. 18
9:23 p.m.
An officer noticed a man drive his vehicle through a closed gate at the Tiger Paw apartments. The suspect was stopped and found to have a suspended driver’s license. A search of the suspect revealed a loaded Smith and Wesson .357-caliber handgun in the suspect’s left front pants pocket. He was arrested for carrying a weapon on school property, aggravated criminal trespassing, vandalism and driving with a suspended license. A search of the vehicle revealed a small bag of a leafy green substance in the pocket of the car’s front passenger seat. The suspect was also charged with simple possession. The suspect is not a student and was placed on trespass status.
Friday, Oct. 19
2:52 p.m.
While on routine patrol around Rawls Hall, an officer observed what appeared to be suspicious activity. The suspect appeared to be selling merchandise out of his vehicle. Upon further investigation the officer observed inside the suspect’s vehicle clothing which still had price tags attached. The suspect gave permission to search the vehicle. Marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a weapon were discovered inside the vehicle. Property belonging to The University was found in the bed of the truck under a covering. The suspect was arrested and transported to 201 Poplar.
Friday, Oct. 19
10:50 p.m.
An officer observed a 1996 Ford Bronco traveling west on Central Avenue disregard the stop light at Zach Curlin. The officer pulled the vehicle over. The suspect and the passenger had bloodshot, watery eyes and smelled of alcohol. The officer performed a field sobriety test on the driver and found him to be intoxicated. A search of the vehicle revealed an open can of beer which was still cold. Neither suspect would take responsibility for the open beer. The driver was placed under arrest for disregarding the red light, reckless driving, minor possession of beer and driving under the influence. The passenger admitted that the vehicle belonged to him. He was placed under arrest and charged with party to a crime and minor in possession of beer. Both suspects were transported to 201 Poplar.
Friday, Oct. 19
11:57 p.m.
Officers were dispatched to 415 State St. on the north side of Rawls Hall to check on a suspicious person/vehicle. Two officers approached the vehicle. The first officer shined his flashlight into the interior of the vehicle and noticed a partially clothed individual seated in the driver’s seat. The driver noticed the officer and reversed the vehicle, almost striking the other officer’s patrol car. The suspect then drove his vehicle over the curb and onto the grass between Rawls and Smith Halls. The second officer blocked the suspect’s vehicle with a patrol car. At this point the suspect once again put his vehicle in reverse, this time almost striking the first officer. The first officer drew his weapon and ordered the suspect to exit the vehicle. The suspect refused and tried to drive forward but was still blocked by the second officer’s vehicle. A third officer drove up to the north side of Rawls Hall and was almost struck by the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect then placed the vehicle in park. The officers were able to open the driver’s side door and remove the suspect-who was naked. The suspect was then arrested and placed in a patrol car. A female passenger was also removed from the vehicle and placed in a separate patrol car. The driver told officers that he was unaware the approaching officers were the police. The suspect was transported to 201 Poplar. The female passenger was released.
Sunday, October 21
9:45 p.m.
Officers received an anonymous phone call that there was a person at Richardson Towers South carrying a weapon. When officers arrived on the scene they were directed to the fifth floor where they found the individual matching the given description. As the officers approached the suspect, they heard a heavy object hit the floor. Officers checked the area and found a lead springloaded blackjack. The suspect was arrested and was charged with carrying a weapon on school property and aggravated criminal trespass.
