If you have seen this image, then you already know something about Makeshift. This figure is the cover of their latest release.
Makeshift Music is an independent record label that focuses on the diverse and unique sounds of Memphis music.
Makeshift was conceived in the summer of 1999 by a group of local musicians and set into motion January 2000 by University of Memphis student Brad Postlethwaite and Christian Brothers University student Josh Hicks.
“We started Makeshift to pull the local music scene together and give local bands a foundation to be heard,” Hicks said.
Thus far, Makeshift has released two compilations featuring local bands and musicians. The first release, appropriately called “The First Broadcast,” focuses on local solo artists, while the second compilation, entitled “Makeshift #2,” concentrates on local bands.
The bands include Lucero, The Lost Sounds, Snowglobe, Palindrome, Who is Keyser Soze, Memphix, American Death Ray and Mito, who is also known for his university pranks.
The two compilations cover nearly every genre of the musical spectrum from country to hip-hop, rock to hardcore and folk to experimental.
“There are so many talented musicians playing so many different styles of music in Memphis, we feel it is good for them to all be represented,” Postlethwaite said.
In the future, Makeshift Music looks forward to keeping up with the ever-changing local sound that can be found here in Memphis.
