Atlantic Records artist Lina treated University of Memphis students to a free show yesterday.
Before her performance in the University Center Ballroom, Lina discussed her musical goals and hopes for a successful career.
Lina said she hopes her image to fans is that she is feminine and strong.
“One lady said the album combined all the music of the 20th century,” Lina said.
Lina described the album as a blend of old-school music meeting today’s popular urban sound.
“I call it an explosion of the past and the present,” Lina said. “It’s a little opera, swing and hip-hop combined.”
Lina said she wants her music to lift up everybody and knock down the barriers of age and race. When Lina saw the diversity of one of her audiences, one of her goals in music was accomplished.
“I reached the goal that meant the most to me when my audience had some older people in it and young people in it.”
Being a new artist with an unique style in the music business doesn’t bother Lina.
“I feel comfortable. I have been asked to be the next Toni Braxton or Mariah Carey, but I didn’t feel comfortable with that.”
Lina said she feels it is important to do college concerts because entertainment performers should stay down to earth.
“Artist are just people too. Doing these concerts puts us on the same level as one big unit.”
Lina had a message for the students of The University of Memphis.
“Believe in yourself, no matter what anybody says about you. Believe in your abilities and overcome any negative obstacle in your way.”
