As the war on terrorism continues, it’s getting uglier by the minute.
First planes were hijacked and crashed into two major U.S. landmarks.
Then there were various arrests of terrorists, and the talk of chemical warfare surfaced.
So we decided to go in and bomb a few countries, in hopes of getting rid of the problem.
Evidently that didn’t work, so we dropped some food for the innocent refugees who were lucky enough to survive.
And now it has come to this — anthrax.
Confirmed reports in New York and Florida, and other specicifc cases, have Americans on the receiving end, once again, of “terrorist” tactics.
In all seriousness, this is not something that should be taken lightly. It seems as if this great U.S. of A. is not as protected and safe as we thought.
From here on, it only seems as if it’s going to get worse. With the number of reported cases, and the numerous Anthrax hoaxes that have abounded in the last few weeks, it will indeed be important to take careful precaution.
However, (yes, there is a flip side to what I am saying), we cannot overreact, which is often what we tend to do.
So be forewarned, teachers, coaches and others, the following excuses may be heard in the near future.
There will be those who won’t pay their credit card bills, or other bills, because of the anthrax scare.
When the company calls them months later because bills have not been paid, they may use the excuse that they didn’t want to open their “anthrax-infected” mail to be safe.
It’s quite possible that athletes may claim that they can’t practice because of a white powdery substance detected in the locker room, or in their gear. This is more than likely talcum, not necessarily anthrax.
Then there are those who may resort to such methods as BC powder, crushed aspirin and a number of other medicines that could be “anthrax”, and claim that they are “experiencing” symptoms, just so they will not have to attend class or work.
Yes, as stupid and ridiculous as this all sounds, it’s probably going to happen anyway. So be ready.
Law enforcement agencies are taking serious measures when it comes to anthrax hoaxes, so please don’t play around with this issue.
This is not to say that anthrax cases will not hit Memphis — anything is possible!
