Memphis senior setter Amie Hamilton broke the Conference USA record for services aces in a career Tuesday night as the Tiger volleyball team swept visiting Samford, 3-0, at Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Memphis (15-3, 5-3 in C-USA), playing its third of a seven-match homestand, won the contest by scores of 30-24, 30-18 and 30-21.
Hamilton, who recorded seven of the Tigers’ 12 aces against the Bulldogs Tuesday, now has 198 career service aces. The previous record, held UNC-Charlotte’s Ozlem Ozkan, was 195.
“I was very proud of how hard we played tonight,” head coach Carrie Yerty said. “I am especially proud of Amie in that she was able to break the C-USA record for aces. She served very well tonight and was very consistent.”
Hamilton, whose powerful top-spin jump serve left several Samford players looking for answers, also led Memphis with 31 assists on the night, helping the Tigers to a .298 hitting clip.
After winning the first game 30-24, the Lady Tigers jumped to a 7-0 lead in the second game and set the tone for the rest of the match.
Senior outside hitter Adrianne Edmonds led Memphis with 12 kills, nine digs and a .371 hitting mark. Seniors Ginger Garrett and Emily Eichmann also totaled double-digit kills with 11 each.
Samford, led by Stefanie Pickett’s four kills, was held to a .137 hitting mark.
The Tigers will host Louisville and Cincinnati on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Louisville is second in C-USA with a 7-2 conference record and is 12-3 overall. Cincinnati leads the league with an 8-1 conference record.
Said Yerty: “We are going to have to continue to stay focused heading into this weekend because Louisville and Cincinnati will be very tough competition for us.”
