BSA sponsoring 'Out of Darkness 2001' unity dance

Some University of Memphis students are getting ready for a night of fun in the name of unity.

Today, the Black Student Association is sponsoring a dance called “Out of Darkness 2001” to unite area colleges and universities for a better future in human relations.

The event is from 8 p.m. to midnight at the University Center Ballroom, and students are encourage to dress in casual attire.

All students are welcome, and they must show a current student identification. Admission is $5 for non-U of M students, $3 for U of M students and $2 for U of M BSA members.

The money raised will go to fund a free concert on Oct. 25 and an inspirational play in November.

Mitochaundrea Cain, BSA fundraising chairperson and event coordinator, said along with students of The U of M, students from Rhodes College, Christian Brothers University and LeMoyne-Owens College have also been invited.

“The Black Student Association feels it is important to get all area colleges involved in the movement for unity,” said Cain.

BSA president Misty Blaton said although the event was planned before the Sept. 11 attacks, the BSA hopes the event can go a long way towards uniting the community even further since the attacks.

“The dance will help prove there is no detour in us coming together,” said Blaton. “The BSA wants everyone to carry the light of unity.”

Blaton said the dance should be a celebration of life and give students the chance to increase sisterhood and brotherhood.

The theme “Out of Darkness,” was inspired because of the reputation of The University’s BSA.

“This event will prove to the campus that BSA is an active organization,” said Blaton.

The BSA wants the event to be a success so they can schedule similar events for the future.

The University hasn’t had a dance in five years due to the infamous history of fights breaking out at Greek parties, according to Cain.

“There will be tight security at this dance,” said Cain. “If something happens it will be taken care of immediately.”

There are more aspects to the heightened security measures. No bags, backpacks or alcohol will be allowed at the dance.

A disc jockey will provide all types of music to accommodate any listening taste.

The event should provide a safe and fun environment for dancing and expressions of unity.
