Women’s Soccer
The Lady Tiger soccer team is off to an 0-2 start in conference play after weekend losses to St. Louis and Marquette, Conference USA’s 2000 runner-up and defending champion, respectively.
After falling behind 3-0 to Marquette (6-1, 2-0 in C-USA) in Milwaukee, Wis., on Sunday, Memphis rallied to a 3-2 score on two goals from sophomore midfielder Rebecca Sparrows. Sparrows’ second goal came with just 16 seconds remaining in regulation.
Although Memphis (2-4-1, 0-2 in C-USA) outshot the Golden Eagles 9-6 in the second period, the Tigers couldn’t overcome Marquette’s suffocating first-half defense, which held Memphis to zero shots on goal before the intermission.
On Friday night before 1,200 fans in St. Louis, the Lady Tigers came up empty offensively as they were blanked 2-0 by the Billikens (3-3-0, 1-1-0 in C-USA). Junior forward Ali Baker led Memphis with two shots on goal while sophomore keeper Katarina Wicksell recorded six saves.
Memphis next plays Vanderbilt at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Echles Field.
Men’s Soccer
The Tigers remained winless over the weekend in two matches at the TCU-adidas Men’s Soccer Classic in Fort Worth, Texas.
Memphis (0-4-2, 0-1-1 in C-USA) was dismantled, 7-0, Sunday by No. 1-ranked SMU, which remained undefeated through six games. After building a 1-0 halftime lead, the Mustangs stretched the gap to 2-0 before pouring on five more goals over a 17-minute span for the final margin.
Friday afternoon against host TCU (2-3-1), Memphis got goals from seniors Sean Fraser and Justin Stralka, but couldn’t overcome a 3-1 halftime deficit as the Tigers dropped a 4-2 decision to the Horned Frogs.

In its first action of the season, the Tiger tennis team scored a major upset victory over the top-seeded doubles team at the Southern Collegiate Championship in Athens, Ga., as Michael Chamberlain and Joe Schmulian defeated Georgia Tech’s David Wright and Roger Anderson, 9-7, in the second round.
